Adenosine

Class
  Antiarrhythmic
Action
  Slows conduction through the AV node to convert PSVT to normal sinus rhythm
Indications
  Narrow complex SVT/PSVT.
Contraindications
 
  • 2nd and 3rd degree heart blocks.
  • Sick sinus syndrome.
  • Poison or drug induced tachycardia
  • Hypersensitivity.
  • Adenosin allergy.
Precaution
  • May cause transient dysrhythmias.
  • Effects antagonized by theophylline.
  • May cause bronchospasm in asthma patients.
Side effects
  • Dyspnea.
  • Nausea.
  • Headache.
  • Dizziness.
  • Facial flushing
Administration
Rout: Rapid IV/IO push Onset: 20-30 seconds Peak effect: 20-30 seconds Duration: 30 seconds
Adult Dose:
  • First dose 6 mg rapid IV/IO push followed by a rapid flush.
  • If no response to initial Second dose after 2 minutes administer 12 mg IV/IO push followed by a rapid flush
Pediatric Dose:
  • First dose 0.1 mg/kg rapid IV/IO push (Maximum dose 6mg).
  • Second dose 0.2 mg/kg rapid IV/IO push ( Maximum dose 12mg).
