Action
 
  • It is an essential element for regulating the excitation threshold of nerves and muscles, normal cardiac contractility, and blood coagulation.
Indications
 
  • Hyperkalemia,
  • Hypocalcemia
  • Hypermagnesemia
  • Calcium channel blocker overdose
Contraindications
 
  • V-Fib during cardiac resuscitation
  • Digitalis toxicity
  • Hypercalcemia
Precaution
  • Do not administer IM or SC. Extravasation of calcium can cause tissue necrosis
Side effects
  • Bradycardia
  • Hypotension
  • Metallic taste in mouth
  • Local necrosis if given IM or IV infiltration
Administration
Rout: IV Onset: 5-15 minutes Peak effect: variable Duration: up to 4 hours
Adult Dose:
  • 1 gm IV/IO over 5 minutes, ensure IV patency and do not exceed 1 mL per minute
Pediatric Dose:
  • 20 mg/kg max 1g slow (over 5 minutes) IV of 10% solution,
