  • Glucose elevating agent (Hyperglycemic)
Action
 
  • Elevates blood glucose levels rapidly and provides short term osmotic diuresis.
Indications
 
  • Hypoglycemia.
  • Coma of unknown origin.
Contraindications
 
  • Intracranial Hemorrhage.
  • Hyperglycemia
Precaution
  • Blood glucose measurement is preferred before administration.
  • Administer thiamine before 50% Dextrose in cases of suspected thiamine deficiency.
Side effects
  • Local venous irritation and extravasation leads to tissue necrosis.
Administration
Rout: IV/IO Onset: 10 minutes Peak effect: 40 minutes Duration: variable
Adult Dose:
  • 25 grams (50 ml) IV/IO push.
Pediatric Dose:
  • Newborn, D10W, 2-4 ml/kg, IV/IO.
  • <2 year of age- D25, 2-4ml/kg, IV/IO.
  • >2 year of age- D50, 1-2ml/kg, IV/IO.
