Class
 
  • Benzodiazepine.
  • Anticonvulsant.
  • Sedative.
Action
 
  • A skeletal muscle relaxant that reduces the incidence and recurrence of seizures induces hypnosis and sedation.
  • Modulate postsynaptic effects of GABA-A transmission.
Indications
 
  • Sustained or recurrent seizures.
  • Sedation prior cardioversion, transcutaneous pacing.
  • Agitated or violent patient.
Contraindications
 
  • Hypersensitivity.
  • Severe respiratory depression.
Precaution
  • Respiratory depression may occur with IV administration.
  • Use with caution in pregnant patients, persons ingesting alcohol, or person ingesting sedatives.
Side effects
  • Lightheadedness.
  • Ataxia.
  • Confusion.
  • Slurred speech.
  • Impairment of mental and psychomotor functions.
Administration
Rout: IV Onset: 1-5 minutes Peak effect: 15 minutes Duration: 15-60 minutes
Rout: IM Onset: 15-30 minutes Peak effect: 30-40 minutes Duration: 15-60 minutes
Adult Dose:
  • 2 - 10 mg slow IV/IO push in 2 mg increments over a 2 - 5 minute period.
Pediatric Dose:
  • 0.1 mg/kg slow IVP/IO at a 1mg/minute rate.
  • Maximum total dose of 4 mg.
