ENDOTRACHEAL DRUG ADMINISTRATION

OBJECTIVES
  • Identify patient with difficult IV access.
  • Identify patient who will benefit from ET drug administration.
  • Identify medications and their doses, which can be given by ETT.
  • Use proper technique for administration of drugs through ETT.
INDICATION OF PROTOCOL
  • Adult or pediatric patient in an emergency situation with difficult IV access who may benefit from administration of certain drugs through ETT. The drugs are:
    • Narcan 5.0mg.
    • Atropine 2-2.5 mg.
    • Epinephrine 2.5 mg.
    • Lidocaine 250 mg.
  • ETT drug dose is 2-2.5 times the IV dose.

PROCEDURE
  • Identify the medication to be given by name and dosage.
  • Prepare the medication.
  • Withhold chest compression during drug administration.
  • Remove the bag valve device.
  • Drug should be injected by catheter below the end of ETT.
  • Several insufflations should be given to patient to aerosolize the drug and improve absorption.
  • Reconnect the bag valve device and ventilate the patient.
  • Monitor the patient.
