FUROSEMIDE (LASIX)

Class
 
  • Diuretic.
Action
 
  • A potent diuretic that inhibits sodium reabsorption by the kidneys.
  • Vasodilatation of the pulmonary veins.
Indications
 
  • Acute pulmonary edema.
  • CHF.
  • Hypertension.
Contraindications
 
  • Hypersensitivity.
  • Known allergy to sulfonamides.
  • Dehydrated patients.
  • Pregnancy.
Precaution
  • Severe dehydration and electrolyte depletion may occur from excess doses of Lasix.
Side effects
  • Dehydration.
  • Decreased circulatory blood volume.
  • Decreased cardiac output.
  • Loss of electrolytes.
Administration
Rout: IV Onset: 1 hour Peak effect: 1-2 hours Duration: 6-8 hours
Adult Dose:
  • 0.5 - 1.0 mg/kg slow IV/IO push.
Pediatric Dose:
  • Volume overload: 0.5-1mg/kg/dose
