GLUCAGON

Class
 
  • Hormone.
  • Anti-hypoglycemic.
Action
 
  • Insulin Antagonist.
  • A protein secreted by pancreatic cells used to increase the blood glucose level when an IV cannot be immediately placed.
Indications
 
  • Patients that are experiencing altered mental status or
  • Unconsciousness due to hypoglycemia.
  • Beta blocker or calcium channel blocker overdose with significant bradycardia.
Contraindications
 
  • Hypersensitivity.
  • Pheochromocytoma.
Precaution
  • Effective only if sufficient stores of glycogen in the liver.
  • Slower onset than IV dextrose.
Side effects
  • Nausea.
  • Vomiting.
Administration
Rout: IM Onset: 5-20 minutes Peak effect: 30 minutes Duration: 1-2 hours
Adult Dose:
  • Hypoglycemia 1.0 mg IM.
  • Beta Blocker Overdose 1.0 mg IV push every 5 minutes
Pediatric Dose:
  • Hypoglycemia 1.0 mg IM (>2 yrs).
