Class
 
  • Anti Psychotic Medication.
Action
 
  • Haloperidol blocks receptors for the neurotransmitters (specifically the dopamine and serotonin type 2 receptors) on the nerves.
  • Haloperidol interferes with the effects of neurotransmitters in the brain which are the chemical messengers that nerves manufacture and release to communicate with one another.
Indications
 
  • Medication to assist with sedation of agitated patients
  • Chemical Restraint.
Contraindications
 
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Poorly controlled seizure disorder
  • If patient had recent sedative medication.
  • Severe CNS depression
Precaution
  • Cardiac Patient with prolong Q-T interval
  • Patient on Diuretic medication
  • The elderly (over the age of 70).
  • Prolonged QT
Side effects
  • Severe dizziness, fainting.
  • Restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck;
  • Convulsions.
  • Tremor (uncontrolled shaking)
  • Stiff (rigid) muscles
  • Chest pain
  • Slow/fast/irregular heartbeat
  • Torsade de pointes.
Administration
Rout: IM Onset: variable Peak effect: 30-45 minutes Duration: variable
Adult Dose:
  • < 65 years: 5mg IM
  • > 65 years: 2.5mg IM
Pediatric Dose:
  • Injectable safety and effectiveness not established.
