MORPHINE SULPHATE

Class
 
  • Narcotic.
  • Analgesic.
Action
 
  • A potent narcotic agonist-analgesic of opiate receptors, inhibit ascending pain pathways thus altering response to pain, it also causes some vasodilatation, thus reducing myocardial oxygen demand.
Indications
 
  • Myocardial infarction.
  • Management of acute pain.
  • Acute pulmonary edema.
Contraindications
 
  • Known hypersensitivity.
  • Respiratory depression.
  • Patients suspected head injury.
  • Undiagnosed abdominal pain.
  • Hypotension.
Precaution
  • Have Naloxone readily available in cases of respiratory depression to counteract the effects of morphine.
  • Vital signs must be monitored frequently.
Side effects
  • Respiratory depression.
  • Apnea.
  • Hypotension.
  • Altered level of consciousness.
  • Nausea / Vomiting.
Administration
Rout: IV/IO Onset: seconds Peak effect: 20 minutes Duration: 2-4 hours
Adult Dose:
  • 2-5 mg slow IV/IO push.
  • Maximum of 10 mg.
Pediatric Dose:
  • 0.05 mg/kg slow IV/IO push to the desired effect.
  • May repeat q 5-10 minutes at ½ initial dose.
  • Maximum dose: Not to exceed adult dose.
