NITROGLYCERIN

Class
 
  • Nitrate, anti-anginal.
Action
 
  • Rapid smooth muscle relaxant causes systemic venodilation, decreasing preload, that reduces cardiac workload. Arterial vasodilation decreasing afterload.
  • Dilates the coronary arteries, increase blood flow to the myocardium, decrease myocardial oxygen demand.
Indications
 
  • Chest pain associated with angina and/or myocardial infarction.
  • Congestive heart failure with acute pulmonary edema.
  • Hypertension.
Contraindications
 
  • Known hypersensitivity.
  • Hypotension.
  • Shock.
  • Right ventricular infarction.
  • Suspected intracranial pressure.
  • Recent use of erectile dysfunction medications (Viagra) within the last 24 hours.
Precaution
  • May cause profound hypotension and reflex tachycardia.
  • Nitroglycerin is light sensitive and will lose potency when exposed to air.
Side effects
  • Throbbing Headache, dizziness, flushing
  • Hypotension.
  • Nausea / Vomiting.
  • Decreased level of consciousness.
Administration
Rout: SL Onset: Immediate Peak effect: 5-10 minutes Duration: 20-30 minutes
Adult Dose:
  • 0.4 mg SL (tablet or spray) repeat every 5 minutes, Maximum 3 doses.
Pediatric Dose:
  • Not Indicated.
