Class
 
  • Antiemetic, selective 5-HT antagonist
Action
 
  • Selectively block serotonin 5-HT receptors in the brain., primary effect is in the GI tract
  • No effect on dopamine receptors therefore does not cause extrapyramidal symptoms
Indications
 
  • Management of nausea and vomiting
Contraindications
 
  • Patients with prolonged QT
  • Hypersensitivity
Precaution
  • May cause QT prolongation
Side effects
  • QT prolongation
  • Bronchospasm
  • Headache, constipation, fatigue, agitation
Administration
Rout: IV/PO/SL Onset: 10-30 minutes Peak effect: 1.5 hours Duration: 8 hours
Adult Dose:
  • 4 mg IV/IM/PO
Pediatric Dose:
  • 0.1mg/kg IV/IM
