Oxygen Administration

OBJECTIVES:
  • Determine the clinical condition and the need for oxygen therapy.
  • Maintain Patient Oxygen Saturation > 94%.
INDICATION:

Patient with mild, moderate or severe hypoxemia due to any disease process e.g. COPD, asthma, cardiopulmonary or respiratory arrest, angina, trauma…etc.

PROCEDURE:
  • Undertake universal precautions.
  • Perform patient assessment, mechanism of injury.
  • Place patient in position of comfort.
  • Connect to cardiac monitor; attach pulse oximetry and BP cuff and analyze rhythm.
  • Mild hypoxia SPO2 91-94% (mild respiratory discomfort with increased respiratory rate). Nasal cannula 4-6 L/min.
  • Moderate hypoxia SPO2 87-90% (cyanotic, restless, tachypneac >20 BPM) Non-Rebreather Mask 10-15 L/min.
