Oxygen Administration
OBJECTIVES:
- Determine the clinical condition and the need for oxygen therapy.
- Maintain Patient Oxygen Saturation > 94%.
INDICATION:
Patient with mild, moderate or severe hypoxemia due to any disease process e.g. COPD, asthma, cardiopulmonary or respiratory arrest, angina, trauma…etc.
PROCEDURE:
- Undertake universal precautions.
- Perform patient assessment, mechanism of injury.
- Place patient in position of comfort.
- Connect to cardiac monitor; attach pulse oximetry and BP cuff and analyze rhythm.
- Mild hypoxia SPO2 91-94% (mild respiratory discomfort with increased respiratory rate). Nasal cannula 4-6 L/min.
- Moderate hypoxia SPO2 87-90% (cyanotic, restless, tachypneac >20 BPM) Non-Rebreather Mask 10-15 L/min.
