RAPID EXTRICATION (KED)
OBJECTIVES
- Identify patient who will benefit from Kendrick extrication device.
- Immobilize patient found in sitting position with Kendrick extrication device.
INDICATION OF PROCEDURE
Patient found in sitting position, in stable condition, commonly used after Automobile accidents (if patient is unstable refer to rapid extrication protocol).
PROCEDURE
- Undertake universal precautions.
- Administer oxygen 100 % via NRM.
- Perform patient assessment
- Rescuer one should be positioned behind the patient to stabilize the head and neck to take manually stabilization of the patient's head in a neutral, inline position.
- Rescuer two checks neurological and vascular response of all extremities.
- Rescuer two measures and applies the cervical collar.
- The KED is slide into position behind the patient.
- The KED is wrapped around the patient (KED should be snug beneath the patient’s armpits), and the middle strap is secured.
- The bottom strap is secured next.
- Each leg strap is wrapped around the leg and secured.
- The top strap of the KED is secured.
- The patient’s head is secured into the KED.
- All the straps are tightened down.
- The patient’s wrist and legs are secured.
- A long spine board is placed under the patient’s buttock.
- The patient is removed from the vehicle and transferred to the long spine board.
- Disconnect the leg straps, allowing the patient’s legs to lay flat on the long spine board.
- Refer to the securing of patient to long spine board protocol.
PRECAUTIONS
- Neurological and vascular checks should be performed on the patient prior to and after extrication, and any changes noted.
- If the patient is unstable refer to rapid extrication protocol.
