SALBUTAMOL

Class
 
  • Sympathetic Agonist.
Action
 
  • Synthetic sympathomimetics that causes bronchodilitation with very little cardiac effects.
Indications
 
  • Bronchial asthma.
  • Bronchospasm in emphysema, chronic bronchitis, pulmonary edema and congestive heart failure.
Contraindications
 
  • Hypersensitivity.
  • Uncontrolled cardiac dysrhythmias.
Precaution
  • Caution should be exercised in patients with a cardiac history.
Side effects
  • Headache.
  • Tachycardia.
  • Palpitations.
  • Nervousness.
  • PVC's.
  • Nausea / Vomiting.
Administration
Rout: Nebs Onset: 5-15 minutes Peak effect: 1-1.5 hours Duration: 3-6 hours
Adult Dose:
  • 2.5 - 5mg in 3 ml saline by nebulized aerosol connected to 6 - 10 l/m of oxygen.
  • May be repeated once per standing orders.
Pediatric Dose:
  • <15kg or <5years: 2.5mg in 3ml saline by nebulized aerosol.
  • >15kg or >5 years: 2.5-5mg in 3ml saline by nebulized aerosol.
  • Connect to 6 - 8 l/m oxygen and may be repeated once per standing orders.
